The state medical examiner’s autopsy into Freddie Gray’s death obtained by the Baltimore Sun revealed that officers placed him on a metal bench in the back of the van after his arrest, but he was not restrained. During a second stop on Baker street, Gray was removed from the van and placed in ankle cuffs, before being slid onto the floor of the van.The medical examiner surmised that Gray may have gotten to his feet at some point during the journey and was thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction sometime between the second and fourth stops. Gray was found lying belly down on the floor while facing the cabin compartment by an assisting officer, who then placed him on the bench. Police picked up a second arrestee at a fifth stop, where Gray was found unresponsive, and kneeling on the floor, facing the front of the van and slumped over to his right against the bench. The medical examiner concluded that Gray suffered a severe spinal injury to the lower left part of his head. Gray died a week after the arrest. All six officers involved in Gray’s arrest and transport are facing criminal charges ranging from second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter to second-degree assault. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Among the revelations: • Investigators found that Gray was mortally injured in the van and not during his arrest, a Washington television station reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources. • Police told reporters they have learned of an additional stop the van made as it was traveling to a police precinct. • An officer involved in the arrest believes Gray was injured before being put into the vehicle, according to a relative who gave the officer's account to CNN. • A second prisoner, who was picked up after Gray, told investigators that he thought Gray "was intentionally trying to injure himself, according to The Washington Post. What happened to Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore man who suffered a severe spine injury and died one week after his arrest, has led to angry debate and protests nationwide. For the first time Thursday, Baltimore police walked with marchers and stopped traffic for them at intersections."*
